Jewelry 1
with Kylie Weinzierl

In this 5 week introductory class, students learn the fundamentals of jewelry-making to create their own wearable designs. We start with cutting, filing, soldering, polishing, and other traditional fabrication skills to make a custom sterling silver bezel-set ring. Using these skills, students then design and create a final project under the guidance of the instructor. Some materials are included, and more will be available for purchase in the studio, as needed.

Instructor Bio:
Kylie Weinzierl is a Boston area interdisciplinary artist, with a primary focus in metalsmithing, a background in sound art, multimedia installation and fabrication, as well as glass work, textile, and performance. Kylie received a Bachelor of the Arts from Arizona State University in 2019, and a Master of Fine Arts from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in February 2024. Kylie is the head Jewelry Instructor at Stonybrook Metal Arts & Sculpture School in Jamaica Plain and the Metals Studio Manager at Lexington Arts and Crafts Society.
Intro to Sand Casting
with Emma Varteresian

In this 2-Day workshop, students will use the delft clay casting technique and cast their minature sculptures and/or jewelry. The beginning of the class will be spent making and/or modifying wax and wire models. Students can start from scratch or use some of the provided samples as inspiration for their models. Then, students will make impressions of their models in delft clay, and pour in molten bronze to create a solid object! We will also go over casting finishing techniques like sanding, filing, and polishing. No prior experience necessary! Any students wishing to work in silver must reach out to the office (jewelry@stonybrookmass.org) at least 2 weeks prior to the class start date to pre-purchase materials.

Instructor Bio:
Emma Varteresian is a new graduate from SMFA at Tufts University, finishing with a BFA in studio art witha concentration in animation and metals and a BA in Environmental Studies. In Fall 2024 she will start grad school at Boston University in the Visual Narrative program. Through storytelling, Emma works with themes of identity, Armenian folklore and mythology, and generationaltrauma. Emma has always been inspired by the intricacies of the natural world and the profoundconnection between one’s environment and the human experience.
Advanced: Exploring Welding and Fabrication
with Grey Hillard-Koshinsky

Did you enjoy taking our Introduction to Welding course and now you want to take on aproject? In this 6 week advanced course, students will build upon the fundamentals learned inIntroduction to Welding by continuing to grow skills in the following welding processes SMAW('Stick'), GMAW ('MIG'), and/or Oxy-acetylene. Students will also have the opportunity toexplore a range of areas such as learning new fabrication skills in forming steel and ironincluding the GTAW ('TIG') welding process and new finishing techniques. This course is idealfor students interested in any of the following: creating metal sculpture, working with found metal, spending more time becoming proficient in a welding coupon for personal orprofessional applications.
Prerequisites: Introduction to Welding as a 6-8+ week course at Stonybrook Fine Arts, Ideally you've taken this course in the last two years and have been utilizing the skills learned on a regular basis. If you have not taken Introduction to Welding with Stonybrook Fine Art but have outside welding experience at Stonybrook Fine Arts in SMAW, GMAW and/or Oxy-fuel welding please indicate that you'd like to be evaluated for inclusion in this course.

Instructor Bio:
Grey Hilliard-Koshinsky is a metalsmith, fabricator and maker with over 20 years ofexperience with ferrous and non-ferrous metal fabrication. Grey began their training in avocational setting and they hold a Master of Fine Arts with a concentration in metalsmithingfrom the College of Visual and Performing Arts Artisanry Department at UMASS Dartmouth. Grey brings 15 years of teaching experience including nearly 12 years of teaching studentsfrom all walks of life at Stonybrook Fine Arts. Grey is proficient in arc welding fabrication processes with both ferrous and non-ferrous metal including SMAW, GMAW and GTAW andmanual welding techniques including forge welding and Oxy-fuel welding. Grey is also trained in small scale jewelry ferrous and non-ferrous metal fabrication and enameling.
Teen Welding Intensive

Welding is an essential part of our lives – from the cars we drive, to the buildings we live in, and has also become prevalent in modern art. Our welding students find inspiration in a variety of welded sculpture, then practice various welding techniques at our studio including gas and arc welding.
Intensives will run Tuesday through Thursday, 10am-4pm. Students learn to use the many tools and machines involved in welding and finishing. Students should bring their lunch or money for lunch at Ula Cafe (walkable) where we take a group at lunch time. We have a small fridge, microwave oven, and toaster oven available for use. Students should wear closed-toe leather shoes, non-frayed jeans, a long sleeve natural fiber shirt, an old cap or bandana, and tie back long hair.
Make a Ring/Set a Stone Workshop
with Kylie Weinzierl

In this beginning level workshop, students learn how to cut and measure sheet metal, file, solder, and set a cabochon stone of your choosing in a sterling silver ring. Students can decide between a Matte or High Shine finish, and we have a variety of cabochons to choose from in the studio. All materials are included.
Custom workshops are available as well, including: wedding ring workshops, teen welding intensives, and more!

Jewelry 1 for Teens

In this introductory course, students learn the fundamentals of jewelry-making to createtheir own wearable designs. We start with sawing, filing, soldering, polishing, and other traditionalfabrication skills to make a custom sterling silver bezel-set ring. Using these skills, students designand create a final project in sterling silver (earrings, ring, pendant, or bracelet) under the guidance ofthe instructor.
Make a Ring Workshop
with Kylie Weinzierl

This 4-hour workshop covers many basics of jewelry fabrication, forming, and finishing. Students learn how to cut and measure sheet metal, properly size a band, texture and stamp metal, solder and decide between a matte or high shine polished finish. Upon completion of the workshop, each student will have a finished copper test band and a finished sterling silver band. All materials are included.

Sculpting the Figure from Life (6 weeks)
with Eve Schauer

Working from live models in a range of poses, students will sculpt the human figure in oil-based clay. This practice is a great way to hone your observational skills and your understanding of gesture and proportion in the human form.You will also gain experience posing the armature and modelling three-dimensional forms in clay. Each pose will be two weeks long (total 6 hrs), after which you should be prepared to dismantle your figure so thatthe clay and armature can be reused for your next sculpture.Models will be posing nude.This class is open to all levels - beginners and experienced sculptors welcome!
Dates: 9/4- 10/9, 2025 (Thursdays, 6-9pm, 6 weeks)
Price: $445
Model fee & materials included
Each pose will be two weeks long (total 6 hrs), after which you should be prepared to dismantle your figure so that the clay and armature can be reused for your next sculpture.
