In this beginning level workshop, students learn how to cut and measure sheet metal, file, solder, and set a cabochon stone of your choosing in a sterling silver ring. Students can decide between a Matte or High Shine finish, and we have a variety of cabochons to choose from in the studio. All materials are included.

Did you enjoy taking our Introduction to Welding course and now you want to take on aproject? In this 6 week advanced course, students will build upon the fundamentals learned inIntroduction to Welding by continuing to grow skills in the following welding processes SMAW('Stick'), GMAW ('MIG'), and/or Oxy-acetylene. Students will also have the opportunity toexplore a range of areas such as learning new fabrication skills in forming steel and ironincluding the GTAW ('TIG') welding process and new finishing techniques. This course is idealfor students interested in any of the following: creating metal sculpture, working with found metal, spending more time becoming proficient in a welding coupon for personal orprofessional applications.

Prerequisites: Introduction to Welding as a 6-8+ week course at Stonybrook Fine Arts. Ideally, you've taken this course in the last two years and have been utilizing the skills learnedon a regular basis. If you have not taken Introduction to Welding with Stonybrook Fine Art buthave outside welding experience at Stonybrook Fine Arts in SMAW, GMAW and/or Oxy-fuelwelding please indicate that you'd like to be evaluated for inclusion in this course.

Instructor Bio:

Grey Hilliard-Koshinsky is a metalsmith, fabricator and maker with over 20 years ofexperience with ferrous and non-ferrous metal fabrication. Grey began their training in avocational setting and they hold a Master of Fine Arts with a concentration in metalsmithingfrom the College of Visual and Performing Arts Artisanry Department at UMASS Dartmouth. Grey brings 15 years of teaching experience including nearly 12 years of teaching studentsfrom all walks of life at Stonybrook Fine Arts. Grey is proficient in arc welding fabrication processes with both ferrous and non-ferrous metal including SMAW, GMAW and GTAW andmanual welding techniques including forge welding and Oxy-fuel welding. Grey is also trained in small scale jewelry ferrous and non-ferrous metal fabrication and enameling.

This 6 week course is designed for students that have completed at least 2 prior Jewelry Courses who want to continue studio time with limited instruction and the company of other metals students. Prior authorization required to enroll. Students are responsible for their own materials, or may purchase them from the studio. In this 6 week intermediate course, students expand on the topics and skills learned in Jewelry 1. The curriculum is flexible based on what students want to make and learn. Some techniques learned in this course are sawing techniques, hinge making, hollow forms, rivets, advanced soldering techniques, and prong settings. Jewelry 1 or prior approval from the instructor required to take this course. Some materials are included, and more are available for purchase in the studio.

This 8 week class teaches beginner students how to use basic mold making skills to cast aluminum and/or bronze. Students learn wax sculpting, mold making, casting, finishing, and patination. The lost wax method with ceramic shell is utilized to create sculptures, seal stamps, bookends, or other functional objects.

While this class is intended for beginners new to the process, experienced students are welcome! If you have taken this class before or already have foundry experience and would like to pay by the class, please contact us.

In this 5 week introductory class, students learn the fundamentals of jewelry-making to create their own wearable designs. We start with cutting, filing, soldering, polishing, and other traditional fabrication skills to make a custom sterling silver bezel-set ring. Using these skills, students then design and create a final project under the guidance of the instructor. Some materials are included, and more will be available for purchase in the studio, as needed.

This 4-hour workshop covers many basics of jewelry fabrication, forming, and finishing. Students learn how to cut and measure sheet metal, properly size a band, texture and stamp metal, solder and decide between a matte or high shine polished finish. Upon completion of the workshop, each student will have a finished copper test band and a finished sterling silver band. All materials are included.

Learn to carve rings, pendants, brooches or small sculptures in wax, then use the wax model to create a finished cast piece in silver or bronze using the lost wax casting method. This 5 week class introduces multiple ways of wax-working including: additive, subtractive, filing, using hot tools and a small alcohol torch, as well as working with investment casting techniques. Several different finishing techniques will be demonstrated, as well. Bronze is included in the workshop cost, silver can be purchased from the instructor during class. 

Instructor Bio: 

Grayson Rizzi is a graduate of Massachusetts College of Art and Design and holds a BFA in jewelry and metalsmithing. Working with metal from a young age, his current work focuses on themes of craft and industry and heavily utilizes color and repetition. When not working in the studio or teaching, he can be found cooking or collecting vinyl records.
