Advanced: Exploring Welding and Fabrication

Did you enjoy taking our Introduction to Welding course and now you want to take on aproject? In this 6 week advanced course, students will build upon the fundamentals learned inIntroduction to Welding by continuing to grow skills in the following welding processes SMAW('Stick'), GMAW ('MIG'), and/or Oxy-acetylene. Students will also have the opportunity toexplore a range of areas such as learning new fabrication skills in forming steel and ironincluding the GTAW ('TIG') welding process and new finishing techniques. This course is idealfor students interested in any of the following: creating metal sculpture, working with found metal, spending more time becoming proficient in a welding coupon for personal orprofessional applications.

Prerequisites: Introduction to Welding as a 6-8+ week course at Stonybrook Fine Arts. Ideally, you've taken this course in the last two years and have been utilizing the skills learnedon a regular basis. If you have not taken Introduction to Welding with Stonybrook Fine Art buthave outside welding experience at Stonybrook Fine Arts in SMAW, GMAW and/or Oxy-fuelwelding please indicate that you'd like to be evaluated for inclusion in this course.

Instructor Bio:

Grey Hilliard-Koshinsky is a metalsmith, fabricator and maker with over 20 years ofexperience with ferrous and non-ferrous metal fabrication. Grey began their training in avocational setting and they hold a Master of Fine Arts with a concentration in metalsmithingfrom the College of Visual and Performing Arts Artisanry Department at UMASS Dartmouth. Grey brings 15 years of teaching experience including nearly 12 years of teaching studentsfrom all walks of life at Stonybrook Fine Arts. Grey is proficient in arc welding fabrication processes with both ferrous and non-ferrous metal including SMAW, GMAW and GTAW andmanual welding techniques including forge welding and Oxy-fuel welding. Grey is also trained in small scale jewelry ferrous and non-ferrous metal fabrication and enameling.
