Welding 1 (Introduction to Welding)

Have you always wondered about what welding is and want to learn more about various typesof welding processes? Are you interested in welding but not sure which welding process would be best for you? Are you an artist, hobbyist or professional in a union looking to learnmore about welding processes to eventually work on your own projects? In this introduction towelding students from all walks of life will explore manual and arc welding processes. Manual processes explored will include oxy-acetylene AKA “torch” AKA “gas” welding. Arc weldingprocesses include SMAW AKA “Stick” Welding and GMAW AKA “MIG” welding. In addition towelding processes students will gain a solid foundation of proper use with hand tools andother shop equipment including the angle grinder, sand blaster, pneumatic hand tools, chopsaw and bench grinder. This introductory class will get students headed in the right directionfor exploring welding further whether it be for your job or a weekend warrior project in yourgarage. No experience needed with welding and/or the tools mentioned above.

Instructor Bio:
Grey Hilliard-Koshinsky is a metalsmith, fabricator and maker with over 20 years ofexperience with ferrous and non-ferrous metal fabrication. Grey began their training in avocational setting and they hold a Master of Fine Arts with a concentration in metalsmithingfrom the College of Visual and Performing Arts Artisanry Department at UMASS Dartmouth.Grey brings 15 years of teaching experience including nearly 12 years of teaching studentsfrom all walks of life at Stonybrook Fine Arts. Grey is proficient in arc welding fabrication processes with both ferrous and non-ferrous metal including SMAW, GMAW and GTAW andmanual welding techniques including forge welding and Oxy-fuel welding. Grey is also trainedin small scale jewelry ferrous and non-ferrous metal fabrication and enameling.
